Newcastle expect Joelinton to return for the visit of Aston Villa on Thursday (15:00 GMT), as the midfielder continues to recover from an injury that took him to hospital following their Carabao Cup win at home to Brentford on Wednesday.
Midfielder Joelinton was replaced at half-time after a challenge with Nathan Collins and did not feature in the Magpies’ 4-0 win at Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Saturday because he was suspended.
“He had several facial injuries… a couple of stitches in and around his ear,” manager Eddie Howe said. “We’ll see how he is (Monday).”
Joelinton had started all 20 of Newcastle’s games in all competitions before missing the trip to Portman Road.
Eddie Howe on Aston Villa:
“We had two games against Aston Villa last season. This will be a really good challenge for us. I think they have good depth on their team, they have some really good players. It is very difficult to play against his style, very well trained, very well… pic.twitter.com/7o1WOXwJji

Howe said Joe Willock is “fine” after receiving treatment in Ipswich for a head injury. “It’s really important now to keep Joe fit for a long period of time,” he added. “He’s worked hard to get back to fitness after a really difficult time for him.”
Willock missed much of last season due to hamstring and Achilles injuries but featured in all but three of his team’s games in 2024/25.
Goalkeeper Nick Pope has missed the last three games with a knee injury, while defender Emile Krafth is recovering from a broken collarbone.
Eddie Howe on the holiday calendar:
“All the reasons for us to be excited about those games (against Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur) are that I am very pleased with how we have played in the last few games and I think we should continue that next week. Us… pic.twitter.com/KaUUIbJxlw

“Nick Pope is fine,” Howe said, admitting he didn’t know when the 32-year-old could return.
“Initially they gave him a period of time in which he had to rest. He has had a couple of injections in his knee and he feels better and stronger.
“(Krafth is) back on the grass and running. The most important thing for him will be contact when he returns to training in a group.”
Eddie Howe on Jacob Murphy:
“Jacob is very selfless, he always plays for the team, he loves to create a goal, he has always been like that. Those qualities that every team needs.” pic.twitter.com/AJd126dCxQ
