It’s not every day an actor from a hit live-action anime project sits down and interviews its creator in their native language, but Netflix one piece Star Iñaki Godoy did just that ahead of the show’s second season.
In a recent Netflix video I still watch the YouTube channelMonkey D. Luffy actor Godoy sat down with Eiichiro Oda on the set of in one piece Set in Cape Town, South Africa, to discuss what awaits us on the Grand Line in season two and how Luffy became a beloved character.
“I got to see some of the real footage, and especially the props, the huge sets, the special effects, the making of the wigs and costumes, the stunts,” Oda said. “I saw so many things and was really touched by everyone’s dedication.”
When Godoy giddily asked Oda if he thought the performance was good, Oda responded in kind by saying, “It was.” Naturally, Godoy burst into infectious laughter, causing Oda to laugh in return. Godoy’s next question, posed in remarkably fluent Japanese despite having started learning the language in January, asked Oda why he made the events of the second season so difficult to adapt, given that the first season of Straw Hat was already an immense task. Another question, of course, that made Oda laugh when Godoy commented on how “huge and crazy” his adventure was before reaching the Grand Line.
“It’s hard. I’m very tired,” Godoy said.
“In that universe, the Grand Line is the harshest of the seas. We need to surprise the public. That’s why there are giants and, of course, many bounty hunters,” Oda responded, teasing the adventures that await us in the next season. “This has to be a season full of new and surprising elements. “That makes it more challenging.”
Godoy’s last question asked Oda how he came up with Luffy and how he turned him into such a deep and endearing character, despite seeming like a simple guy at first glance.
“Luffy is an ideal child for me. When you are an adult and join a company, you don’t always get to do what you want. Entering society often means losing freedom. “Luffy has the heart of a child, so he does what he wants,” Oda said. “That aspect is probably, for adults who already work hard in society and for children who are about to enter society, what makes Luffy so attractive.”
Oda was not remiss in congratulating Godoy by congratulating him for bringing Luffy to life and energizing audiences around the world. Then the two share a loving embrace. It’s very sweet.

Maintaining their usual secrecy, Netflix and Tomorrow Studios have not yet revealed who will be the actor who will bring the Straw Hat Pirates’ doctor, Tony Tony Chopper, to life. All we’ve seen of the reindeer worker is a shot of him from behind, confirming, to the dismay of some fans, that he won’t be a muppet but a little CGI guy. hopefully next time one piece sit-down (or preview) will show Chopper in all his cute glory.
In io9’s first season review, we praised the Netflix show for not requiring viewers to have invested in the anime to appreciate it, writing, “The show was clean. It was slippery. Everything fell into place and at the end of the season, even though Luffy screamed again, I wanted a second season.”
