The fifth and final season of You comes before you think.
Netflix confirmed on Thursday, December 19, that You will return in 2025. According to the synopsis, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) returns to New York “to enjoy her happily ever after until her perfect life is threatened by the ghosts of her past and her own dark desires.”
In addition to Badgley, 38 years old, star of season 5. Charlotte Richie, Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp and griffin matthews. Teaser art for the final season showed Joe’s “murderous goodbye” and the “guilty treasures” he has in his possession.
Youwhich originally debuted on Lifetime in 2018, featured Badgley as a serial killer whose obsession with a little girl grew to terrifying heights. Based on books by Carolina Kepnesthe series saw greater success after moving to Netflix in its second season.
Badgley previously teased that You’s writers weren’t planning on giving his character a happy ending.
“That’s the way it has to be because he has an irrefutable problem and if he just said, ‘They were made for each other, all he needed was to find someone who also kills people,’ that’s not justice,” he said. Entertainment Weekly in 2019, referring to the Season 3 arc between Joe and Victoria PedrettiLove Quinn’s character. “I think it reflects reality because I don’t think people who kill say, ‘I just need someone who can do the same thing.'”
As Joe developed a larger fan base, Badgley questioned a possible redemption arc and explained to Lounge in February 2023, “The show is never a clinical portrait of a serial killer or a mentally ill man. So the fun we can have when we do all this is that it’s not meant to be real. And for me that doesn’t take away anything. It is meant to be an exploration, an exercise. “There’s a fantasy and camp element that allows us to do a lot of things and, again, I think we benefit from that.”
He continued: “If you’ve done things that Joe has done, change would mean coming to terms with the fact that you’ve murdered more people than you can count on one hand. If you are really there, I think what your reconciliation would require, much less with any kind of judgment in society, is more than what you have indicated at this point that you are capable of doing, because you have done those things. “
With Joe returning to New York, there have been several theories about possible on-screen twists. Badgley joined in on the fun by teasing that someone familiar could return in the final season.
“I hear you’re on the edge of your seats, waiting and theorizing about You’s epic conclusion,” Badgley said in a pre-recorded message at Netflix’s TUDUM event in June 2023. “More importantly, considering what, or should say who Joe will face when he finally returns to New York? Although I can’t say who yet. We all know there are a lot of loose ends in Joe’s past. The question is: who are you?
