For many Indian students, getting admission into the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a cherished and prestigious milestone. Naturally, graduating from an IIT is considered a matter of pride. However, an IIT graduate’s attempt to flaunt this achievement did not go down well with social media users, who termed it arrogant and “super embarrassing”.
The controversy began when a photo surfaced of a car bumper sticker proclaiming: “You are chasing an IITian” began to circulate online. The image, shared in the Reddit group. r/JENEEEtardscaptured a car stuck in traffic with the sticker visible on the right side. A message addressed to those behind the car read: “You are chasing an IITian but that’s okay. “We are used to it.”
The post quickly gained traction on social media, sparking a variety of reactions. While many found the sticker “embarrassing,” others defended the car’s owner, arguing that passing one of the world’s toughest exams gives them every bragging right.
One user commented, “I was embarrassed when I read this, which made me think there was someone who wasn’t embarrassed and had this taped to their car without hesitation.” Another added, “Super embarrassing. Only the low keys flex like this. Even when a Harvard graduate introduces himself without saying Harvard, he says, ‘I went to school in Boston.'”
An IIT graduate also weighed in on the post and stated: “I’ve really stopped telling people where I study just because of these assholes.”
On the other hand, a user defended the owner of the car saying: “No, shit, they passed one of the hardest exams in the world while you’re sitting in your parents’ house unemployed living off your father’s money at the age of 30.”
Another user commented, “These people are fighting so hard to liquidate IIT that they have nothing else to do.”
The Reddit post, shared a few days ago, has since garnered more than 3,500 upvotes and more than 200 comments.
