The Newcastle captain was the hero in his 150th start for the club.
Bruno Guimaraes enjoyed the “incredible feeling” of marking his 150th start for Newcastle United with a 90th-minute winner as they beat Fulham 2-1.
Newcastle came into the game on the back of a superb 3-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League, taking the lead in the 18th minute through Jacob Murphy, but Sasa Lukic equalized for Fulham 11 minutes into the second half.
But Newcastle finished strongly and, after peppering Fulham’s goal, the Magpies recorded just their third win of the Premier League season when Guimaraes scored on the rebound after Will Osula’s initial effort was saved by Bernd Leno.
It marked a reversal of fortunes in late-deciding games for Newcastle this season, as the Magpies suffered defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal through goals that came right at the end.
“I feel incredible,” Guimaraes told BBC Final Score.
“We were very tired from Wednesday’s game and I think we had to learn to finish the game.
“I’m happy because in the end we scored a goal. In the last few games we have been punished at the end, by Arsenal and Liverpool.
“Will Osula came, shot and I was ready for the rebound in my 150th start with this club. Now I just want to rest a little because I’m very tired.
“My whole family is here, my mother, my children, my wife, so to score a goal like that is very special at Gallowgate End. It’s a very good moment.”
Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade hit the post early on as the hosts looked to make a lightning-quick start.
After Guimaraes shot wide from long range, Murphy hit the post with a cross shot, although he would not be denied a second time.
Murphy stole possession from Calvin Bassey deep in the Fulham half and raced towards goal to fire a precise shot from the left post.
The Newcastle winger was thwarted by Leno in another one-on-one situation that came either side of Fulham’s missed chances for Adama Traore and Emile Smith-Rowe.
Fulham grew in the game and deservedly tied, Lukic scoring after Raúl Jiménez hit the crossbar after an excellent cross from the left wing by substitute Kevin.
However, Newcastle recovered from that setback, and Guimaraes wasted a golden opportunity when he headed in from close range before Anthony Elanga saw an attempt on goal blocked by Ryan Sessegnon.
Joelinton headed into the side netting and Sandro Tonali was denied by an excellent save from Leno, but the Fulham goalkeeper could do nothing to prevent Guimaraes from making amends for his earlier mistake as substitute Osula’s energy was rewarded.
“We can’t always play the perfect game, but we need to find the three points and today we did it,” Guimaraes added. “Very happy for everyone. This is the Newcastle I know, we will fight until the end.”
