Expert warns that universities breed dangerous ideologies for culture

The murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and a deadly shooting at a Minneapolis school are raising new concerns about violence fueled by ideology.

Dr. Corey Miller, president and CEO of Ratio Christi, a Christian apologetics and evangelism organization that operates primarily on college campuses, told Fox News Digital: “What happens on college campuses impacts what happens in the culture.”

“Politics is behind culture, culture is behind education,” he explained.

Kirk was killed during a Turning Point USA event on the Utah Valley University campus in September. Weeks earlier, in August, a gunman killed two children and wounded 18 others during a mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. Lawmakers and experts have argued over whether ideology played a role in the shootings.

Miller, philosopher and author of “The Progressive Miseducation of America,” argues that America’s culture wars begin in the classroom.

Miller argues that universities are breeding grounds for ideological intolerance, blaming Marxist ideas.

“There is a postmodern type of cultural Marxism that is taught in universities and that fuels this hostility towards what is a culture of murder. It is an inferior vision of human life,” he reasoned.

Miller told Fox News Digital that the Marxist worldview taught in many universities pits people against each other by emphasizing social status and identity.

“Any type of inequality is considered injustice and it really ignites a firestorm among students who feel they have the ability to serve in the cause of justice,” Miller said.

Several studies support Miller’s warning. A survey conducted by Inside Higher Ed found that 87% of professors have difficulty talking about politics on campus. Another from Hanover Research It was found that more than 90% believe that academic freedom is threatened. A Harvard article reached a similar conclusion, citing a growing “cancel culture” in higher education.

Miller warns that what starts on campus doesn’t stay there and says the answer is more debate, not censorship.

“The search for truth requires the competition of ideas,” he added.
