The Taliban official says that the American envoy agrees on the exchange of prisoners at the Kabul meeting | Taliban news

The reported visit follows one in March 2025, which led to the release of an American citizen held for more than two years in Afghanistan.

The United States officials have agreed to an exchange of prisoners after a rare talk with the authorities in Kabul, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban Administration.

Adam Boehler, the special envoy of the Trump administration for the response of the hostages, and Zalmay Khalilzad, former special envoy of the United States for Afghanistan, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban, Amir Khan Muttaqi.

“Adam Boehler, referring to the issue of citizens detained between Afghanistan and the United States, said both countries will exchange prisoners,” said Vice Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar after his meeting.

There was no immediate statement from Washington regarding the meeting, and Khalilzad did not immediately respond to a Reuters phone call when comments were requested.

Mahmood Habibi, a naturalized American citizen and businessman who previously worked for a telecommunications company in Kabul, is the American detainee of the highest profile, according to Washington. The United States offers a $ 5 million reward for information to find it, and the Taliban authorities deny any participation in its disappearance of 2022.

According to the reports, the Taliban have pressed for the release of Muhammad Rahim, the last Afghan national held in the Guantanamo Bay, who has been arrested without charge since 2008.

Another mechanic from the American airline George Glezmann, was released after more than two years of detention during a March visit to Kabul by Boehler.

That agreement, mediated by Qatar, was described by the Taliban as a “humanitarian” gesture and a “sign of good will”.

Before that, in January 2025, the two parties carried out an exchange of prisoners in which American citizens Ryan Corbett and William Wallace McKenty were released in exchange for Khan Mohammad, an Afghan national who serves two perpetual chains in the United States.

Both parties also agreed to continue the discussions about the jailed nationals in the countries of the other, added the statement.

The Taliban administration, which took power in 2021 after 20 years of US military intervention in Afghanistan, is not recognized by Washington.
