Unai Emery has labeled Emi Martínez “the best goalkeeper in the world” and says that his commitment to Aston Villa is “massive” after a transfer of the day of the deadline to Manchester United failed.
Argentina’s International had his heart destined to join United, but the Old Trafford Club was by Senne Lammens de Antwerp, leaving Martínez in Limbo.
He got rid of international service, but now he is back and he is likely to return to Everton’s trip tomorrow.
Emery said: “Everything happens with the players, maybe staying, maybe they were close to leaving, maybe other players were close to others or joining us. It is normal, I understand it completely, everything.
“He stays here is good news, I am very happy. He is the best goalkeeper in the world, his commitment to Aston Villa is huge. He is always training to get his best, respecting Aston Villa.
“Some circumstances happen. Everyone is happy, today’s energy was very good. Emi is happy and now he knows that his challenge is with Aston Villa and his national team. He has many challenges this year.”
It has been a gloomy beginning of the season for Villa, who has claimed only one point of three games and has not yet scored.
They were active in the last days of the transfer window, bringing Jadon Sancho, Victor Lindelof and Harvey Elliott.
Of the three it is only likely that Elliott will play at the Hill Dickinson stadium.
Emery explained: “Sancho was not training with the group (in Manchester United) and will physically need time.
“Harvey was constantly training and playing with Liverpool and is more or less fit.
“Lindelof was training individually and is available to be with us, but he will need time to meet us tactically.”
The former Everton Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley duo will miss a return to Meseyside.
“Matty Cash is available,” Emery said. “We have some injured players who are close, (Andrés) García, (Boubacar) Kamara and (Amadou) Onana. Ross Barkley has a personal problem and I think it will return and will be available soon, but not yet.”
