Before directing the first film adaptation of anime Ghost in the Shell, Director Mamoru Oshii made his own original works, including Angel Egg. The film turns 40 at the end of this year, and to celebrate, the GKIDS distributor takes it to the cinemas of North America for the first time.
As of November 19, the theaters from all over the country will put a 4K restoration of the film on the big screen. Created by Oshii and the characters designer Yoshitaka Amano, the post-apocalyptic film is starring a young woman who safeguards an egg and a child with mysterious dreams on a bird. The film was remarkably the first original work of OSHII, and has themes that would stay in his subsequent works, and has very little spoken dialogue. At that time, the public did not connect completely with him due to his biblical allegories and meaning, but has grown up in time. Last May, it was screened at the Cannes 2025 Film Festival.

After the theaters leave, Angel Egg will land in HBO Max. Earl this week, Gkids announced a deal With the streamer to bring 20 films for live and lively action adults to the platform, starting with Your name, Shin Godzilla, and Perfect blue On September 1. HBO Max already houses Studio Ghibli films in the United States, and in a press release, Royce Battleman of WB Discovery said that this new agreement “allows us to continue delivering premium movies to our subscribers and solidifies the position of HBO Max as a main destination in space.”
The subsequent titles that reach HBO Max include Summer wars, children from Lobo, and The girl who jumped over time.
