Enzo Maresca has confirmed that strengthening defense is its highest priority after the recent acl surgery of Levi Colwill.
The young defender, who played an important role for Chelsea last season and during the Club World Cup, faces a long recovery and is expected to lose most of the next campaign after suffering the injury during training earlier this week.
Although Chelsea has already invested more than 200 million in new signings this summer, Maresca indicated that the club probably returns to the transfers market to reinforce its defensive options in the absence of Colwill.
“It’s a priority for me,” Maresca told Channel 5.
“Levi is a fantastic player. What we achieved last season is for him. He played many games with me, I love him. We will miss him.
“We are also trying to find different solutions.”
Maresca made these comments after Chelsea’s first preseason in Stamford Bridge, where the blues won a comfortable 2-0 victory against Bayer Leverkusen despite having resumed the training only four days before.
Reflecting on the performance, Maresca said: “(I am) very happy with the performance, especially after only four days of training. It is good to start over.”
One of the outstanding players was the young Brazilian Estevao, who scored with Joao Pedro and impressed in his debut, betting on a regular place when the Premier League season begins.
“He is very young, very, very young. He needs to adapt, he needs to play. I said yesterday that he will help because he is a fantastic player,” Maresca added about the promising talent.
With Chelsea reinforcing their attacks of attack significantly this summer, Maresca acknowledged that not all players will be satisfied with the game time, given the competition for the places.
“Not everyone will always be happy, because if they don’t play, they are not happy.
“They have to understand that everyone is good, 22, 23, 24 players, and they have to understand that there will be many rotations.”
