This publication contains spoil For “Superman”.
In the history of “Superman” films, perhaps the only role that has a similar weight to that of Krypton’s last son is the father who sent him to begin with. As was problematic, Marlon Brando put the bar with his turn in the 1978 classic of Richard Donner “Superman: The Movie” as the Kriptonian complainant Jor-El, who warned his native planet of his destiny.
They spent 35 years before the character gave life again on the big screen again, only this time with Russell Crowe (he, casually, the idol of then Actor Superman Henry Cavill) played the role in the “steel man” of Zack Snyder, and did a good job too. However, with the writer and director James Gunn to make it clear from the beginning that his opinion on the Metropolis protector would not waste time with a history of origin, it seemed fair to assume that Jor-El did not appear in any way in the “Superman” of 2025.
Surprisingly, however, Kal’s father appears through the mandatory archived message that Jor-el left his son in transport, and is not interpreted by nothing less than Rocket Raccoon, Bradley Cooper. Spraying the beard and mandatory white robes with Angela Sarafyan as Superman’s mother, Lara, the trilogy actor “Guardians of the Galaxy” gives a new and interesting turn to the old man of Supe. In fact, Gunn makes Kal-an intriguing couple in general, if not necessarily for the right reasons.
Jor-El de Cooper has a similar appearance for those who came before him, but with a crucial difference: unlike Brando and Crowe’s iterations, Cooper’s version actually speaks Kriptonian, with Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hault) even doing everything possible to translate his message when he gets it. This is not a bit extra of flair of Gunn’s new version about The Man of Tomorrow. It is a canon for the universe of DC Comics that the citizens of the world that once was the world of Krypton did not speak English, unlike the Kryptonians seen in past superman movies. Batman even learns a little Kriptonian (of course) before his initial encounter with Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, in the comics. (Milly Alcock, in particular, plays Supergirl in the DC Universe of Gunn and Peter Safran).
The language barrier is also key to the history of Superman de Gunn, since the final section of the message of Jor-el shows that he intended to send his son to the earth in the hope of taking care of the planet, “invincible”. It is a significant deviation from the previous iterations of the character that we have seen in films and shows over the years and something that, it is true, is a little faster here, considering that it is such a massive turn in the classic Superman tradition. Be that as it may, he raises the question: given the power of the star that supports this particularly notable member of Superman’s family tree, is it possible that Cooper’s Jor-the Cooper appears later … and if so, will he have to answer for his crimes from beyond the tomb?
The deaths in comics are as common as costume changes, but that does not mean that they always stay. Of course, Jor-El has been predominantly absent from the land of the living over the years, but there was a recent development in the comics that saw him travel forward to time to meet his son and grandson, Jonathan Kent, before being sent back to meet his destiny.
However, in the case of Cooper’s Jor-El de Cooper, it would be easy to assume that, now that Kal-El has abandoned his inheritance and the objective that was originally given after leaving Krypton, who has also cut all ties with his biological parents (and rightly). However, this is the Oscar nominee and A-Lister Bradley Cooper that we are talking about. That is, it would be interesting to see it may return to its role in the future adventures of DCU centered on Superman as a kind of advanced AI. This would also allow him to better explain his initial intentions and teach his son more about the history of Krypton (that Kal-now believes he has left).
It is also worth considering that, given the little that most cinephiles know about the history of origin of Kara/Supergirl, their own Krypton escape could be highlighted in the next movie “Supergirl” led by Alcock. Therefore, the film could include a flashback by Jor-El warning his younger brother, Zor-El (Kara’s father), about the danger they face. However, for the moment, Cooper’s cameo works simply by itself. Even so, do not be surprised if the actor’s gifter makes some return in any adventure that his son performs below.
“Superman” is now playing in theaters.
