Recently I had to write a script for a list of films that I felt that they owed him a little or a great debt with The matrix. One of the films I focused during the least amount of time on that video was 2002 Balancewritten and directed by Kurt Wimmer, writer and director of 2020 Corn childrenOne of Stephen King’s worst films of all the time I’ve seen.
So now that I have admitted to having given Kurt’s science fiction film the short range in that video and I have properly remembered the people who made, not joking, a worse Stephen King movie that both of them both The fault Sequelae, I want to give Wimmer the best effort of Wimmer’s direction when he looks back, because both the film and its release definitely are worth another aspect.
So, the first criticism of Balance We have to address the history and the alternative future world in which it takes place, because a word that I am sure that it is used against this film is “derived.”
It is a word used when an art work is taking a recognizable source of inspiration and people do not feel that you are doing anything … well, inspired by it. Instead, they cannot avoid seeing it as a copy and pasta work.
Balance Unquestionably it is inspired by classical dystopian novels and images and, therefore, dystopian relatives, creating a world where human beings live in a fascist state where emotion and artistic expression are suppressed in the name of eliminating war.
It reminds me more than a bit of my favorite video that I have done for this channel in Harrison Bergeron. You should see that.
The Sociedad de Libria in BalanceAn openly fascist state (nobody accused Kurt Wimmer of subtlety), keeps peace by ordering everyone taking a drug enrolled from the emotion called Prozium. As I said, Kurt and subtlety are not bedmates, even if this is just a topical riff and a brand change from Soma de Huxley’s Valiente Nuevo Mundo.
BalanceThe management of its inspirations reminds me of another science fiction film that receives the word “D”, 2013 Forgot. The visual styles of these films are focused on action, and their world science fiction designs are elegant, stripped and simplified. The same can be said to your plug-and-play approach with your influences.
Imagine that each specific inspiration for a work of art is a block of wood of different colors, such as the alphabet with which children play. Do children still play with those? I have not been a child for some years. Anyway, artists take each of those wooden blocks and can use them, however, they want to build their own art. Some could carve the blocks in new shapes, some could crush the blocks and then paste something new of the broken fragments.
But movies like Forgot and Balance I feel that they take those blocks and do little more to place them next to and on each other. The best thing that occurs to their influences is just a larger block.
I think this type of mentality is what people are trying to convey when they call a “derived” movie. And I would argue BalanceThe history and the world of science fiction and the world succumb to the biggest block problem. So, despite the fact that their songs, characters of characters and general narration present themselves strongly, barely bring anything new to the table that has not been explored better in better stories.
That Balance Offer that these literary stories are not a lot of fights of great and stupid weapons with Christian Bale, that they look stupid. Balance It is at its best when it is only a simple but elegant action movie. It can be an empty head action (literally at one point), but Wimmer understands how to make weapons fights that show unique locations or conceptually elegant sequences such as shooting.
And in addition to Christian Bale, the rest of BalanceThe cast is doing exactly what asks for and raising the material with which they have to work. There really is no weak link in the whole. The true heroes of Balance They are actually the casting directors. I mean, Angus Macfadyen is in this. Komodo of Warriors of virtue! Love ‘in.
And Wimmer takes the most of the shot in Berlin, a place whose fascist architecture certainly helps take home the fears of the real world he is using in Balance.
Okay, I don’t know where this can be in the script, so before talking about BalanceThe launch and the box office and all those good things, I just have to make the editor do something, so have patience with me while explaining some things very fast.
A “tempered track” is a temporary music band composed of musical material of origin (generally other movies) that is used when editing images, which allows filmmakers to have some music to work before having their own original score.
If you watch as many films as me during the time I, you can start listening when an original score is trying to sound like another family film music, and they are likely to get that family film music for their temporal track.
What does this have to do with Balance? In case you never have the opportunity to illustrate this again, theory Balance I used a very unique choice in its temperature track: the Smashing Pumpkins song “The Beginning the End is the Beginning” of the Batman and Robin soundtrack. It is not the score, the soundtrack. Am I going crazy?
Well, what happened to Balance To bend a failure? Well, he did not receive a super warm reception of most critics at that time and currently have a 40% critical score in Rotten Tomatoes. Roger Ebert gave him three stars of four of four, so if you have been tracking our videos, that is still a half star less than Spawn.
If you observe the basic data such as BalanceThe theater launch of the USA
Balance He retro $ 1.2 million at the US box office and another $ 4.1 million internationally, which makes their theater take just a quarter of their budget of $ 20 million reported. It sounds like nothing more than bad news, right?
Well, this is an instance in which real money had already been made before the film reached a single screen. Thanks to pre -launch sales in different markets around the world, such as theatrical exhibition rates and home videos contracts, Balance He had obtained sufficient gain for distributors, Miramax, decided to go back in promotion and advertising, which in turn meant the number of screens in which the film would reproduce everywhere.
Thankfully, Balance It seems to have left this failure behind, since the public has helped the film to be widely adopted. It does not maintain such a strong effectiveness for me as time progresses, and some of its biggest block problems are even more lunkheads today, but I can still enjoy its simplest and more silly pleasures. And I will take any anti -fascist action movie that I can get right now.
And hey, I will even throw a bone to Kurt. I still say Balance It is his best direction effort, but he also wrote The beekeeper Last year, what surprised me with the equally shameless that it was his socio -political comment while he also managed to be stupid and fun.
Balance It is stupid and fun, and it is fine even if you are trying to seem much smarter than it is. It is definitely smarter than Corn children.
Look at the podcast Chat semi -trailer Where I visited a complete episode about the stephen King of Kurt Wimmer Corn children. Look at the Gender episode Warriors of virtue For more of my obsession with Angus Macfadyen.
And most importantly, it continues to return to Giant Freakin Robot.
