Matt Murdock and his friends (and enemies) are ready to return with Daredevil: Born Again in March. The road to getting this show has been somewhat tense, in part due to a creative overhaul in 2023 that arose from Marvel’s overall issues with the TV format.
In a recent interview with SFX MagazineShowrunner Dario Scardapane talked about pivoting away from that original Chris Ord and Matt Corman version. According to Scardapane, Ord and Corman’s version, which only had less than half of its planned 18 episodes filmed before being scrapped, “had some really strong points.” But it didn’t feel in line with what Reckless was set to be.” In that initial version, born again was an MCU-connected soft reboot of the Netflix series that also kept some (but not all) elements of that initial show. Once Scardapane was brought in, the Netflix series (and by extension, larger Defenders universe) were part of the MCU, and born again It could completely pick up where the show left off.
Speaking about the “U-turn,” actor Charlie Cox acknowledged the first born again The iteration just “wasn’t working at all,” even as he called it equally “interesting and valid” in its own right. Ord and Corman wanted to avoid “doing the exact same thing,” and when Scardapane came on board, a new pilot was shot to be more in line with the Netflix series. That did the trick, as it made clear how much born again The trailer is working to make you think about the best parts of Reckless. However, there are some changes ahead: Scardapane too he told SFX On his desire to have “a lot less navel-gazing” than the original series and have more fun in the moments between the characters.
In Scardapane’s eyes, this show is more of a “New York crime story” compared to the original noir feel of the Netflix show. For him, the least attractive scenes came “when they were two characters in a room talking about what a hero is.” He was quick to clarify that he wasn’t throwing any shade, he just didn’t want characters “who complain about their lot in life, I wanted to see them doing things. I felt like it was done.” As such, there will be longer scenes in Born again, particularly during fights. When he ran Punisher Series, the characters “hash things” for five pages, so there would be room for action scenes. With characters like Matt, Punisher and newcomers like White Tiger and Muse to play with, Scardapane teased the show will be “big action scenes at a much faster pace” than before.
How big are we talking? We will find out when Daredevil: Born Again Hits Disney+ on March 4.
