I think I found the healthiest game in the Playdate catalog.

I didn’t set out to play when I picked up my this weekend. I was actually looking for something else, but I lazily searched for only half of the correct title and found myself looking at jump rope STAR! at the top of the results. Curious, partly because “Hot Rope Jump” was one of my favorite minigames in Mario Party 2 In the past, I’ve clicked on it and been greeted with images that looked like something I’d tape to my refrigerator if given to a 5-year-old. It was kind of a “say no more” moment; I bought it immediately.

As expected from the title, jump rope STAR! is a jump rope game for Playdate. It offers a few different modes for solo and cooperative play, the latter in which two players share one device. I haven’t come across many multiplayer games for Playdate, so that alone is great. The game was created by Chris Corciega (Soinksters Games), but the art was “designed by a talented 5-year-old girl,” Maya. And it’s adorable. While trying to set new high scores, you use the crank to control the swing of a jump rope held by a bipedal bunny and a… striped pig (?). Okay, I’m not entirely sure which character the second character is, but those two are swinging the rope, and the goal is to do it at the same time as the little stick figure’s jumps so as not to make him trip.

Its pacing isn’t always consistent and it speeds up as you go, so it starts to get quite tricky after about a minute. But pulling off perfect moves will earn you points in the Star Meter on the side of the screen, and once it’s full, you can use that power to temporarily slow down time and perform more moves while the girl is in the air. In the other modes things get a little more complicated. When playing with a friend in two-player capture mode, for example, one of you will have to press buttons to move the girl so she can catch shooting stars while the other person swings the rope. (I found that it is very difficult to do it on your own.)

It’s a simple but fun little game, made even better by the fact that you can involve another person in the silliness. Adults and kids alike will be able to enjoy it, and there’s a kids mode for a more forgiving style of play if you don’t want family game night to get too competitive. This seems like another one of those perfectly play date games, the kind that seem to fit naturally with the device, and try to make them understand its charm.
