Dolly Parton explains how she and her husband of 58 years avoid arguments


After 58 years of marriage, Dolly Parton and her husband Carl Thomas Dean know a thing or two about commitment and maintaining a healthy relationship.

During an appearance in “Dumb Blonde” by Bunnie Xo podcastThe country music icon, 78, opened up about her unique bond with Dean and explained how they avoid arguments within their relationship.

“He’s quiet and I’m loud, and we’re fun,” he told Jelly Roll’s wife on the podcast. “Oh, it’s hilarious. And I think one of the things that’s made it last so long over the years is that we love (and) respect each other, but we have a lot of fun. Whenever there’s too much tension, anyone of us would like to find a joke about it to really break the tension, where we don’t let it go that far.

“We never fought back and forth,” he added. “And now I’m glad we never did it, because once you start that, it becomes something that lasts a lifetime. I’ve seen it with a lot of people and I thought, ‘I’ll never start that.’ I couldn’t bear to think that he would say something that I couldn’t bear… because I am a very sensitive person towards others and towards myself.

The couple has been married since 1966. Parton met Dean in a laundromat when she was 18 and he was 21.

While Dean has been Parton’s biggest supporter, he has tried hard to stay out of the spotlight all these years.

“He loves music, but he’s not the least bit interested in participating in it. And he told me that from the beginning,” he told Bunnie Xo.

“I begged him to come with me in ’67. We got married in ’66. That’s when I won BMI’s first song of the year award (“Put it Off Until Tomorrow”). I rented him a tuxedo and, you know, he “I begged him to go, and he did. And, oh, he was very uncomfortable all night.”

When they returned home, Parton said Dean “started doing things” right away.

“He said, ‘Look, now I want you to do everything you want and I wish you the best, but don’t ever ask me to go to another one of these damn things because I’m not going.’ And he never did,” she said.

“So we have that respect, and I respected him because I didn’t know he was going to be so uncomfortable, but he doesn’t even like to go out, you know, to big dinners or anything like that,” she added.

The “Jolene” singer said their different interests actually bring them closer together.

“He was a homebody and that worked well for us,” she said. “I don’t know if anyone is guided by astrology or pays attention to that. But he’s a Cancer and I’m a Capricorn, and those are compatible signs. He loved going places, whether we were going to drive across the country or whether we would have planned something. But, boy, he couldn’t wait to get home.”

“He wanted to be home and I am a gypsy by nature,” she added. “I love going and I love seeing what else is out there. But I think… that worked out well for us.”
